How to Check the Oil on a Kohler Lawn Mower Engine

Many major brands of lawn mowers use Kohler engines for power. Kohler engines require regular maintenance to keep them running as they should. Before starting the lawn mower it is necessary to check the oil to ensure proper lubrication. Checking the oil on a Kohler is similar to checking the oil on any other brand of lawn mower engine. The biggest difference is that riding mower engines have a dipstick while push mowers usually have no dipstick.

Move the lawn mower to a level area. If you have a riding mower, raise the mower hood or lift the seat to access the oil cap. Locate the oil cap on your mower. The cap is usually yellow and is pointing straight up on riding mower. Push mowers have the oil cap on one side of the engine.

Turn the oil cap counterclockwise with your fingers, unthreading it from the engine. Riding mowers usually have a dipstick that attaches to the cap. If you have a dipstick, wipe it clean with a rag.

    • 3

Check the oil level in the hole, if you have a push mower. The oil should be up to the top of the hole without spilling over. Add oil as necessary and screw the oil cap back onto the engine.

Insert the clean dipstick into the oil hole, if you have a riding mower. Twist the oil cap clockwise until it stops. Turn the oil cap counterclockwise and pull the dipstick back out of the engine. The oil level should be at the "F" or "Full" mark on the dipstick. Wipe the dipstick clean each time you check the oil.
