How to Remove a Lawn Boy Flywheel

The flywheel on a self-propelled Lawn Boy walk-behind lawnmower is the small pulley located between the bottom of the mower deck and the mower blade. When inspecting the flywheel, you will notice a belt that extends from the pulley to the front of the mower. The belt uses power from the engine to drive the self-propel transmission. If you need to remove the engine for maintenance, you must remove the flywheel from the drive shaft before you can remove the engine.

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the two screws that secure the black plastic cover to the front corner of the mower deck. Press the sides of the cover inward and then pull the cover off the mower deck.

    • 2

Unscrew the tensioning screw on the transmission until you can pull the drive belt off the transmission pulley.

    • 3

Place the mower on its side, so the air cleaner faces upward. Pull the belt through the access hole in the mower deck.

    • 4

Loosen the nut that holds the mower blade onto the driveshaft with a wrench and pull the blade off the shaft. Place the blade off to the side.

    • 5

Remove the belt from the flywheel and place the belt off to the side.

    • 6

Place the strap wrench around the flywheel, hold the flywheel still with the wrench and remove the nut from the center of the flywheel with a box-end wrench.

    • 7

Place the tangs on each arm of the pulley puller around the back of the flywheel and place the threaded shaft of the puller onto the center of the flywheel. Turn the threaded shaft with a box-end wrench until the flywheel comes off the shaft.
