The PTO Won't Work on My Yard Machine Riding Lawn Mower

The PTO (power takeoff) clutch on your riding lawn mower is a part that controls the distribution of power to the mower's blades. A failing PTO means a failing set of blades, rendering your mower effectively useless. Yard Machine riding lawn mowers are manufactured by MTD and feature Briggs & Stratton engines with PTO shafts that may fail at any time. Fortunately, you can troubleshoot the engine assembly and repair the part without the potentially expensive consultation of a professional.

Instructions

    • 1

Power off your Yard Machine riding lawn mower and open its front hood over the engine. Locate the PTO housing on the underside of the Yard Machine's engine. It will be found directly under the circular flywheel closer to the back of the engine assembly.

    • 2

Clean the Yard Machine PTO clutch's housing with a wire brush and wipe away any debris with a damp cloth.

    • 3

Note the three slender slots on the PTO clutch's housing. These are the adjustment slots. Insert a feeler gauge into the first adjustment slot. There should be only just enough room for you to slide the gauge in, and the inner sides within the adjustment slot should touch up against each side of the gauge.

    • 4

Tighten the bolt on the first adjustment slot if there is "wiggle room" for the feeler gauge. The space inside is too great and must be adjusted. Use a socket wrench to tighten the bolt until the desired size is reached. Remeasure with the feeler gauge to make sure the adjustment slot is properly calibrated.

    • 5

Repeat the procedure on the Yard Machine riding lawn mower's other two adjustment slots.
