How to Remove a Briggs & Stratton Starter Clutch

Park and turn off your lawn mower if necessary.

Pop the front engine hood. Find the oil dipstick on the bottom left side of the engine, beside the oil plug. Unscrew the oil plug and drain the oil into the oil pan.

Find the flywheel by following the spark plug's ignition wire back to the magnetic coil, directly in front of the circular flywheel.

Remove the bolts on the mower's flywheel using a socket wrench.

Slide a flywheel holder over the flywheel and remove the flywheel's center nut with your wrench.

Ensure the flywheel holder is locked into place and tighten the bolt at the center of the holder with your wrench until the flywheel comes entirely free. Set it aside.

Remove the bolts on the oil pan using the wrench. Take off the oil pan.

Find the clutch shaft on the bottom of the engine, now that the oil pan has been set aside. Take out the two bolts on the shaft with your wrench.

Return to the top of the engine assembly. Use a rubber mallet to hit the top center of the unit where you removed the flywheel. This will loosen the clutch shaft and allow you to remove it entirely.
