How to Start a Craftsman Mower With a 17 HP Briggs & Stratton

Craftsman mowers with 17 horsepower Briggs and Straton engines are well suited for mowing larger yards and towing light loads. But even a solid and dependable lawn tractor isn't any use to you if you can't start it. By following a simple procedure, you'll be certain that your Craftsman will roar to life when you need it to do its work.

      Remove the gas cap and fill the tank with fuel. Check the oil level using the dipstick on the left side of the engine. Refill the oil if necessary.

      Set the Speed Control lever on the left side of the dash panel to the "Parking Brake" setting. Set the blade engage lever on the right fender to "Off."

      Push the Throttle/Choke lever all the way forward. Press your foot onto the clutch and depress the pedal.

      Turn the ignition key all the way to the right, to the "Start" position. When the engine engages, release the key and let it fall back one position to the "Run" position.
