Cub Cadet Z Force Troubleshooting

The Cub Cadet Z Force is a line of zero-degree turn riding lawnmowers from MTD that feature Briggs & Stratton engines. If your Cub Cadet Z Force lawnmower fails to start or otherwise run properly, you will need to troubleshoot the issue before your lawn and your home's appearance are visibly impacted. Potential problems include old fuel, a faulty spark plug, a disconnected battery or an incorrectly wired solenoid.

Instructions

    • 1

Verify that there is gas in your Cub Cadet Z Force's gas tank. Sometimes the most simple problems are the most common.

    • 2

Remove old gas in the tank from the previous season by first pouring a small amount of new fuel into the tank, starting the mower then allowing it to run idle. This will eventually burn all of the old fuel and allow you to refill the tank entirely with fresh gasoline.

    • 3

Open the front engine cover of your Cub Cadet Z Force lawnmower. Consider replacing the spark plug if your mower is an older model or you have used the mower's current spark plug for two seasons. Spark plugs wear down over time. Disconnect the thin, black plug wire from the back of the spark plug and insert it into a replacement spark plug.

    • 4

Verify that the battery's two terminal wires are still connected to the battery. There is a bolt on either side of the battery that connects the black, negative terminal wire and the red, positive terminal wire. If one or both are disconnected, position the wire's end over the bolt and tighten it with a socket wrench. Twist the wrench clockwise over the bolt to secure the wire in place.

    • 5

Trace the red terminal wire back to the solenoid between the battery and the Briggs & Stratton engine. Ensure it is connected to the bolt on the solenoid. If it is not, use the socket wrench to screw it into place as you did on the battery.
