How to Replace the Clutch on an LT2000 Craftsman Lawn Tractor

The LT2000 Craftsman lawn tractor is a Craftsman riding lawn mower manufactured by Husqvarna that features a Briggs & Stratton engine and attached clutch that controls the flow of power to the Craftsman's blades. The clutch is critical to the overall functioning of the Craftsman LT2000 lawn tractor and will need to be replaced if it has failed and cannot be troubleshooted and repaired. Fortunately, Briggs & Stratton clutch replacement is not a procedure limited only to professionals and the original manufacturer. You can replace the clutch on your Craftsman LT2000 lawn tractor irrespective of your familiarity with lawn machines.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your Craftsman LT2000 lawn tractor and remove the keys from the ignition. Open the front cover over the tractor's Briggs & Stratton engine.

    • 2

Find the oil plug on the base of the Briggs and Stratton engine. It is arranged slightly to the side. Remove the oil plug by unscrewing it. Allow the oil to drain out to the pan below.

    • 3

Locate the Craftsman LT2000 lawn tractor's flywheel behind the magnetic coil on the rear of the Briggs & Stratton's engine assembly. Loosen and remove the bolts on the flywheel's cover using your socket wrench. Remove the cover.

    • 4

Remove the center nut on the top of the flywheel with your wrench.

    • 5

Fix the flywheel holder over the exposed flywheel and ensure the holder's two arms fit snugly down over the flywheel's sides. Tighten the center bolt on the holder with your wrench until the increased pressure causes the flywheel to come loose from the engine assembly. Remove the flywheel.

    • 6

Return to the bottom of the Craftsman LT2000 lawn tractor's engine assembly and remove the oil pan's bolts with your wrench in order to take off the pan. This will expose the Craftsman's clutch shaft.

    • 7

Take the bolts found along the length of the shaft out with your wrench.

    • 8

Use a rubber mallet or rubber hammer to strike the top of the Briggs & Stratton engine assembly where you removed the flywheel. Do not use a typical metal hammer. This will dislodge the clutch shaft for removal from the Craftsman LT2000 lawn tractor.
