How to Change the Ignition Coil on a Lawn Mower

You need three things to start any combustion engine: fuel, spark and oxygen. Regardless of the type of engine it is, if one of these things is missing, the motor will not run. If the spark is missing, then that means there is a problem with the ignition coil and you will need to replace it. The procedure is the same for any small engine, regardless of the manufacturer. The project requires no special tools, and the ones you will need are in most home toolboxes.

Remove the cover from the engine using a socket and ratchet, if needed. Pull the spark plug wire from the spark plug. Locate the ignition coil at the other end of the spark plug wire. Remove the wire from the post on the ignition coil using a pair of needle-nose pliers. This is the engine kill wire.

Remove the coil assembly from the engine using a socket and ratchet. Place the new coil on the engine in place of the old one. Place an index card between the new coil and the magnet. This will ensure that there is plenty of space between the two to prevent them from making contact.

Tighten the coil retaining bolts with a socket and ratchet. This will ensure that you have the proper spacing between the coil and the plug. Plug the spark plug wire back onto the plug. Install the cover on the engine and tighten the retaining screws using a socket and ratchet, if needed.
