Disconnect the battery cable from the negative battery terminal with a wrench, and then disconnect the battery cable from the positive battery terminal. Position the battery cables so that they cannot accidentally come in contact with the battery terminals while you remove the starter.
Locate the starter on the side of the engine. Use the replacement starter as a visual reference to find the starter. If you do not have a replacement starter, find an approximately 8-inch-long, cylindrical tube. The tube has a second cylindrical tube molted to it that is approximately a quarter of the size of the larger tube. The starter has a small wire harness plugged into it and also one large wire bolted to the end of it.
Remove the nut that secures the large wire onto the end of the starter, and then pull the wire off the threaded stud.
Unplug the electrical wire harness from the starter. Press the harness-locking tab, and then pull the harness off the starter housing.
Remove the bolts that secure the starter housing to the engine block with a wrench and then separate the starter from the engine block.
