How to Disable the Push Button Rio Switch on a John Deere Riding Mower

John Deere builds a number of interlocking safety systems into the operation of its riding lawn mowers. One of these is the Reverse Implement Option, known as RIO. This prevents the mower blades from operating while the lawn tractor is traveling in reverse. The RIO switch can be temporarily disengaged by a series of actions from the driver's seat. John Deere does not advocate or sanction disconnecting the RIO switch permanently from within the engine compartment, as this can create a safety hazard. The RIO switch is simple to disable and will remain disengaged until the mower is turned off, when it will automatically reset and reengage.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift and hold the "Power Take-Off" or "PTO" lever on the dash in the "Reverse Implement" position.

    • 2

Depress the reverse power pedal lightly, while simultaneously holding the "Power Take-Off" or PTO lever in the "Reverse" position.

    • 3

Release the PTO lever to the neutral position to allow the mower blades to rotate while traveling in the reverse gear.

    • 4

Repeat Steps 1 through 3 each time you wish to disable the RIO switch and mow while in reverse.
