How to Rebuild a 420 John Deere Carburetor

The 420 is a riding lawn tractor manufactured by John Deere. If your John Deere 420 tractor does not accelerate when the throttle is increased, or if it stalls out when the choke is applied, it means the carburetor is clogged. Over time, debris and impurities in the fuel can build up inside fuel lines and in the ports and jets of the carburetor, in which case the carburetor should be removed, taken apart, cleaned and then rebuilt.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the Deere's engine compartment and pry the air filter cover off by hand. Remove the wing nut beneath it and lift the air filter out to access the carburetor.

    • 2

Remove the fuel lines and throttle linkage from the carburetor with a pair of pliers. Use a nut driver to remove the retaining bolts holding the carburetor in place. Lift the carburetor out from the engine.

    • 3

Remove the float bowl with a screwdriver. Clean the float bowl and the float out thoroughly with spray carburetor cleaner. Replace the float bowl gasket with one from the carburetor rebuild kit if need be.

    • 4

Remove the carburetor jets with a screwdriver. Clean out the jet holes well with the spray cleaner and a thin brush.

    • 5

Clean out the fuel intake ports with the cleaner and a brush.

    • 6

Attach the float bowl and gasket to the bottom of the carburetor with the screwdriver. Install all the jets back onto the body of the carburetor.

    • 7

Set the carburetor back in its place inside the engine compartment. Fasten the retaining bolts with the nut driver.

    • 8

Slide all the fuel lines and the throttle linkage back in place with the pliers. Put the air filter back into place on top of the carburetor and replace the filter cover.
