How to Wire a Kohler Magnum

The Magnum is a four-cycle, single cylinder motor manufactured by Kohler for use in riding lawn mower brands like Scotts. The Kohler Magnum is equipped with a pull-style recoil starter that does not require wiring. However, the Kohler Magnum also has an electric start switch that does need to be connected to the battery of the tractor in order for it to work properly. If the electric start will not work on the Kohler, new wiring may have to be installed.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Open the engine compartment on the tractor where the Kohler Magnum is mounted.

    • 2

Remove the negative and positive battery cables with an adjustable wrench before making adjustments to the Kohler electric starter.

    • 3

Locate the electric starter. It is beneath the fuel tank on the bottom left hand side of the engine on the rear.

    • 4

Open the starter cover with a screwdriver to access the starter wires.

    • 5

Eyeball the distance from the electric starter to the battery and then cut two lengths of wire that size with the wire strippers. Strip the ends of both sides of each wire. Attach O-rings to the ends of each wire.

    • 6

Wrap the end of one wire to the positive terminal connection inside the electric starter with a screwdriver. Run the other end of that wire to the battery and connect the O-ring to the positive battery terminal. Slip the positive battery cable back on and tighten it with the wrench.

    • 7

Wrap the end of the other wire to the negative starter connection and tighten it down with a screwdriver. Connect the other end of that wire to a grounding surface, like the frame or chassis, and then screw it down with a screw or bolt.

    • 8

Replace the battery's negative cable with the wrench and try the starter to test it out.
