How to Fix a Sticky Kohler Starter

Kohler starter motors are common on riding lawn mowers. They look just like an automotive starter, only they are smaller. Just like an automotive starter, the motor has a small gear that meshes with a gear inside the engine. The starter solenoid, which mounts to the outside of the starter motor, forces the gear into the engine. When the starter solenoid goes bad, it can make the starter motor’s gear sticky. This means the gear does not retract back into the starter motor after the mower’s engine starts. To correct a sticky starter, you must replace the starter solenoid.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the negative battery cable from the mower’s battery with a socket and ratchet. Place the negative cable where it cannot meet a grounded surface. A good way to do this is to cover the cable’s connector with a rag.

    • 2

Locate the starter bolted to the bottom of the engine. Use the replacement solenoid as a guide to help you locate the starter, or use the list of Kohler starter pictures listed in reference material, such as from Out Door Distributors.com.

    • 3

Remove the bolts that secure the wires to the back of the solenoid with a socket and ratchet. Label the wires so you know where they go when you install the new solenoid.

    • 4

Remove the bolts that secure the solenoid to the start motor’s housing with a socket and ratchet. You will need an extension bar between the socket and ratchet to reach the bolt that rests between the solenoid and the engine block.

    • 5

Pull the old solenoid off the starter motor’s housing and then insert the new solenoid in place.

    • 6

Secure the solenoid to the housing with the original bolts. If you received new bolts with the replacement solenoid, use the replacement bolts.

    • 7

Place the wires back onto the threaded studs on the end of the replacement solenoid. Secure them with the nuts that came with the replacement solenoid.

    • 8

Reconnect the negative battery terminal connector to the negative battery terminal.
