How to Jump-Start a Toro Tractor

Depending on the size of your lawn, a sitting tractor will save you a lot of time and energy over a basic push mower option. Toro offers a line of lawn and garden tractors in a range of sizes. These tractors use a 12-volt battery to power the engine. The battery may not start if you have not run the tractor in a while. To get your Toro tractor back up and running, jump-start it using your car battery.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull your car beside the tractor and open the hood for both vehicles. Check that the jumper cables can reach both batteries. The jumper cables are split into two separate ends, each end having both a positive cable and a negative cable.

    • 2

Clamp down the positive jumper cable on your car’s positive battery terminal. The positive cable is colored red, while the negative cable is colored black. Often there is a piece of rubber covering the positive terminal; if so, lift it up to access the positive terminal. The positive terminal will have a plus symbol.

    • 3

Connect the opposite positive cable to the positive terminal on your Toro tractor battery.

    • 4

Connect the negative cable to the negative battery terminal on your car. The negative terminal is marked by a minus symbol.

    • 5

Connect the second negative cable to a metal portion of the engine block on your tractor.

    • 6

Turn the car on so that the lights and radio work, but do not crank the engine. Cranking the engine can damage the battery on your tractor.

    • 7

Sit in your tractor and start the engine. If it doesn’t start immediately, wait five to 10 minutes for the battery to charge and retry. Once you get the tractor started, put the parking brake up.

    • 8

Remove the cable in reverse order. Start by removing the negative cable from the tractor engine block, then the negative cable from the car. Continue by removing the positive cable from your tractor. Finally, remove the positive cable from the car.
