How to Override the PTO Backup Feature

The positive take off (PTO) on a riding lawn tractor is what engages the mower deck and moves the tractor into gear when the clutch is pressed. One safety feature of the mower PTO is the reverse safety switch. This switch automatically shuts off power to the mower's cutting blades if the mower is put into reverse, to prevent disastrous accidents with children and pets. Some mowers, however, are equipped with a Reverse Implement Option, which can temporarily override the reverse safety switch and allow the driver to mow in reverse for short periods of time.

Instructions

    • 1

Check to make sure there are no children, pets or other obstacles behind the riding mower.

    • 2

Push the "RIO" button in. It will be located directly beneath the shifter column.

    • 3

Move the shift lever into the reverse position with one hand, while the other hand still holds the "RIO" button in.

    • 4

Push the "RIO" button again or shift into a forward gear to disengage the override.
