How to Open the OHC Cover on a Craftsman Rotary Lawn Mower

Some Craftsman rotary mowers use an OHC engine from Kohler to power the blade. Just like other gas-powered lawn mower engines, occasionally the pull rope requires replacement. Unlike a standard engine, it is necessary to remove the OHC cover on a Craftsman rotary lawn mower to service the recoil rope or other parts on top of the engine. Although there are several models, the removal process of the cover is generally the same. Most often the main cover retaining screws are hidden under a center cover.

Instructions

Disconnect the spark plug wire boot from the spark plug. Look for the four Torx screws securing the middle cover insert to the top of the OHC cover, if your Craftsman mower has a center cover. The screws are around the circular center of the cover. Remove the screws with a Torx driver and lift the center cover away from the mower.

    • 2

Remove the five hex screws on the inside circumference of the OHC cover with a socket wrench, if your cover uses the center cover. If your Craftsman mower does not have a center cover, remove the six screws on the outside perimeter of the OHC cover with the socket wrench.

Lift the OHC cover straight off the mower engine.
