How to Install a Starter on a Gravely L1

The L1 is a heavy, industrial-use walk-behind mower manufactured by Gravely. If the spark plug is good and there is fuel in the tank, but the vintage mower still will not start, there is a chance that the starter is bad. The starter system is an older recoil type starter with a pull-rope. Pull-style ropes can dry-rot, crack or break, and when they do, they need to be changed out. It takes about a 30 minutes to replace a Gravely L1 starter.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the Gravely's spark plug with pliers.

    • 2

Cut the old starter rope just below the rubber handle.

    • 3

Remove the starter cover with a nut driver.

    • 4

Pull the starter assembly out, and use the pliers to release the tension on the recoil spring.

    • 5

Unwind the old starter rope and remove it. Wind the new starter rope around the new starter assembly, and reset the spring tension with the pliers.

    • 6

Place the new starter assembly back into the cover and bolt the cover down with the nut driver.

    • 7

Slip the free end of the new starter rope back through rubber handle and mount it on the handle of the Gravely.
