How to Rebuild a 951 Carburetor

The Cub Cadet line of mowers manufactured by MTD rely on Briggs & Stratton mowers. The 951 engine carburetor designed by Briggs & Stratton may falter and require complete disassembly, cleaning and reassembly before the Cub Cadet lawn mower will function properly again. This requires the additional removal of a number of parts around the carburetor, including the muffler and gas tank.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Pan

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the Cub Cadet lawn mower and allow the engine to cool.

    • 2

Remove the Cub Cadet mower's muffler. The muffler is on the left of the Briggs & Stratton engine assembly, toward the bottom. Loosen its bolts with a socket wrench to disengage the muffler.

    • 3

Remove the Cub Cadet's gas tank by also loosening and pulling out its bolts with the socket wrench. Slide the tank away from the rest of the Cub Cadet engine assembly, taking care not to spill any gas.

    • 4

Separate the carburetor intake from the rest of the carburetor. You will find several screws and bolts holding it in place. Remove these screws with a Phillips screwdriver and the bolts with a socket wrench. Set the intake aside.

    • 5

Place a pan under the bowl-shaped bottom of the carburetor that remains. Loosen the Cub Cadet carburetor bowl's nut and allow the gas to seep into the pan.

    • 6

Remove the 951 carburetor bowl's nut completely. Wash the nut in a dish of carburetor cleaning solution.

    • 7

Clean out the inside of the 951 carburetor bowl with a cloth and the carburetor cleaning solution.

    • 8

Fasten the Cub Cadet's carburetor bowl back into place with the previously removed nut.

    • 9

Reconnect the 951 carburetor's intake piece onto the rest of the carburetor with the screws and bolts you previously removed.

    • 10

Slide the Cub Cadet's gas tank back into place and use your wrench to reinsert its various bolts.

    • 11

Slide the muffler back into its position on the Briggs & Stratton engine's lower left side. Secure it in place with your socket wrench and the bolts you removed earlier.
