How to Install Walbro Carburetors on a Riding Mower

Walbro carburetors are used on Briggs & Stratton small engines on a variety of riding lawn mowers. Briggs & Stratton engine assemblies are popular choices on mowers, but carburetors do break down, making it necessary for you to disassemble the Walbro carburetor and either reassemble or replace it. Fortunately, this is not a process that requires any special tools or unique carburetor knowledge. You can install a Walbro carburetor on your riding mower even if you have never attempted carburetor installation before.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Pan
  • Carburetor cleaning solution
  • Cloth
  • Replacement Walbro carburetor

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your riding mower's engine and allow it to cool.

    • 2

Find the Briggs & Stratton engine's muffler at the left of the engine block. Take out the muffler's bolts with a socket wrench, then slide the muffler off the engine.

    • 3

Remove the riding lawn mower's gas tank. Take out the dipstick, then remove the various bolts along the tank with the socket wrench. Pull the tank off.

    • 4

Twist the air filter off the rear of the Walbro carburetor's fuel intake piece, which is behind the carburetor. The carburetor is halfway up the right side of the Briggs & Stratton engine.

    • 5

Remove the Walbro carburetor fuel intake section by taking out all the screws and bolts that connect it to the remainder of the bowl-shaped carburetor. You can remove the bolts with your socket wrench, and the screws can be removed with a Phillips screwdriver.

    • 6

Slide a pan under the Walbro carburetor's bowl.

    • 7

Use the socket wrench to loosen and remove the nut on the bottom of the Walbro carburetor. Your pan will catch any fluid that leaks out. Wait until all the fluid leaks out before proceeding.

    • 8

Remove the Walbro carburetor bowl now that it has been loosened from the engine block by removing its nuts.

    • 9

Clean out the Walbro carburetor bowl with carburetor cleaning solution and a cloth if you plan on reusing it. Otherwise, dispose of it and have a replacement Walbro carburetor on hand.

    • 10

Put the Walbro carburetor bowl back into place by reinserting the nut with your socket wrench.

    • 11

Connect the Walbro carburetor intake piece to the rear of the carburetor by reinserting its removed screws and bolts with your Phillips screwdriver and socket wrench, respectively.

    • 12

Put the muffler back onto the engine's lower left side and fasten it against the Briggs & Stratton engine block with the bolts you previously removed. Use your socket wrench to tighten the bolts into place.
