How to Replace a Carburetor on a Craftsman Riding Lawnmower

The Craftsman riding lawnmower utilizes a Briggs & Stratton engine assembly. The engine's carburetor may suffer irreparable problems that require its complete replacement. Replacing the Craftsman carburetor requires the temporary removal of the muffler, gas tank, dipstick, air filter, throttle linkage rods and carburetor intake. Fortunately, you can remove these parts to access and replace the mower's carburetor without any professional assistance. No special tools are necessary.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the Craftsman riding lawnmower.

    • 2

Find the Craftsman mower's muffler on the lower left of the engine. Take out its two bolts with a socket wrench.

    • 3

      Remove the gas tank's dipstick.

    • 4

Remove the gas tank's three bolts with your socket wrench. Slide the tank off the Craftsman mower. Ensure the tank is oriented sideways so gas does not spill out.

    • 5

Remove the Craftsman mower's carburetor. You can find the carburetor about midway up the right side of the Briggs & Stratton engine assembly. The carburetor is distinctive in that it consists primarily of a bowl-shaped part with the carburetor intake on its rear. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove the two screws that support the carburetor intake against the Craftsman's engine block.

    • 6

Find the two throttle linkage rods on the mower's engine block. Slide these off the block, then remove the carburetor's air filter. The air filter is on the rear of the carburetor intake and can be twisted and pulled off.

    • 7

Remove the two bolts from the carburetor intake with the socket wrench. Again, the intake is the piece on the rear of the carburetor. Its bolts can be accessed now that you have removed the air filter. These are what hold the intake to the rest of the carburetor.

    • 8

Remove the intake from the engine block.

    • 9

Unscrew the nut on the underside of the carburetor's bowl with your socket wrench. This nut is just below the carburetor's needle valve on the bottom of the bowl. Twist the carburetor bowl off the engine assembly once the nut has been removed.

    • 10

Screw on the replacement carburetor bowl in the space vacated by the old bowl. Secure it in place by tightening the old bowl's removed nut into the underside of the new bowl with your socket wrench.

    • 11

Use the Craftsman mower's carburetor intake and connect it to the replacement carburetor bowl with the two bolts you removed from the intake previously. Reconnect the Craftman's throttle linkage rods.

    • 12

Secure the carburetor intake against the Craftsman mower's engine block using your screwdriver and the two Phillips screws you removed previously.

    • 13

Slide the Craftsman mower's gas tank back into place and reattach the three bolts with your wrench.

    • 14

Put the dipstick into place and twist the Craftsman's air filter back onto the carburetor.

    • 15

Set the muffler back into place by reattaching its two bolts with your wrench.
