How to Rebuild a Briggs and Stratton 6HP Carburetor

Power down the engine and allow it time to cool before attempting any operating procedures.

Locate the muffler by looking to the lower left of the engine assembly. Remove the muffler's two securing bolts with a socket wrench, then slide the muffler off.

Pull the dipstick from the engine's gas tank and lay it aside, then remove all the bolts securing the tank to the machine using your socket wrench. Slide the tank off.

Locate the carburetor halfway down the right side of the engine. It has a bowl shape. Remove the screws on the back of the carburetor's intake. The intake piece is on the rear of the rest of the carburetor, and its screws will need taking out with a Phillips screwdriver.

Twist the air filter off the back of the carburetor's intake and set it aside. It is not held in place by screws.

Pull out the bolts that hold the intake piece onto the rest of the carburetor by first loosening the bolts with your wrench. Slide the bolts out and then set the intake piece aside.

Slide a pan directly under the bottom of the carburetor bowl. Loosen and remove the nut on the bottom of the bowl with your socket wrench, then wait as all the excess fuel leaks out and gathers in your pan.

Slide the carburetor bowl off the engine.

Clean out the carburetor bowl with a cloth and some carburetor cleaning solution. Use a wire brush to scrub the carburetor bowl's nut with cleaning solution.

Set the carburetor bowl back in place and secure it with the socket wrench to tighten the nut back into the bowl's bottom.

Fix the air intake piece back onto the rest of the carburetor by reinserting the two removed screws with the Phillips screwdriver. Twist the air filter back onto the rear of the intake.

Restore the gas tank back by reinserting its bolts with your socket wrench and sliding the dipstick back into place.

Place the muffler back onto the lower left of the engine with the final two bolts left over. Tighten the bolts with your socket wrench.
