How to Recognize a Carrillo Rod

Since 1963, Carrillo has manufactured components for combustion engines, ranging from production automobiles to lawn mowers. A piston rod is a metal rod that connects the engine’s piston to the engine’s crankshaft. There is one good way to recognize a Carrillo piston rod. However, to identify the rod, you must be able to see it. Since the piston rod rests inside the engine’s cylinder, you must remove the cylinder before you can identify the rod.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug and then remove the spark plug from the cylinder head with a spark plug socket and ratchet.

    • 2

Place a screwdriver into the hole for the spark plug. Manually crank the engine by the crankshaft until the screwdriver moves upward. Keep turning until the screwdriver just starts to move back down. Stop and rotate the engine back until the piston reaches top-dead-center, or TDC.

    • 3

Remove the bolts that hold the cylinder head on the cylinder with a socket and ratchet. Then remove the cylinder head from the engine.

    • 4

Pull the cylinder head straight up and off the piston. This exposes the piston and the piston rod.

    • 5

Inspect the side of the piston rod. On the side, the rod will have “Carrillo” stamped in large letters. This is the indication that the piston rod is a Carrillo rod.
