How to Adjust the Control Bar on a Lawn Mower

Walk-behind lawn mowers are often used by people of varying heights. To make the effort more safe and comfortable, most walk-behind lawn mowers feature adjustable control bars, onto which the engine throttle and a safety shut-off lever are mounted. These controls are better managed when the control bar is properly adjusted to the operator's specific height. You can adjust the control bar on your lawn mower with no tools or special skills required.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the lawn mower engine.

    • 2

Locate the two control bar adjustment levers. The levers will be where the bar meets the mounting brackets at the rear of the mower frame.

    • 3

Raise the control bar of the lawn mower slightly. Brace the control arm with your shoulder or ask a helper to support the control bar for you.

    • 4

Pull the adjustment levers in toward each other. This frees the two adjustment pins on each end.

    • 5

Raise or lower the control bar to the desired height.

    • 6

Release the levers, allowing the pins to enter the adjustment holes in each bracket. Make sure the pins are fully seated into the same position holes on both sides.
