How to Remove a Circlip Tire

A circlip is a spring or tension clip that applies pressure to hold an item in place. Tires that are held on lawnmowers use an external circlip that you can see on the outside of an axle or shaft. External circlip pliers work the opposite of regular pliers for removal of the clip. When you squeeze the handles, the jaws open to stretch the ends of the circlip apart for removal. Circlips allow a tire to rotate forward and backward on the shaft without moving side to side.

Things You'll Need

  • External circlip pliers
  • Spray lubricant (optional)
  • Needle-nose pliers (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Examine the circlip or spring clip on the tire axle or shaft. Locate the two ends with circular holes in them. Depending on the way a circlip is put on, the ends may face in any direction.

    • 2

Insert a pair of external circlip pliers into the circlip holes. There are two protruding tips on the end of the pliers to insert in each hole. You may need to slightly squeeze the pliers to align each tip in a hole simultaneously.

    • 3

Squeeze the pliers handles together to release the circlip. As you squeeze the pliers handles, the two jaws of the pliers move apart and decrease tension on the circlip.

    • 4

Pull the pliers away from the axle or shaft with the circlip remaining on the end of the pliers.

    • 5

Place one hand on each side of the tire and pull it off. You may need to slightly rock the tire as you pull it toward you to remove it or use a spray lubricant to remove stubborn tires.
