How to Assemble a 6.5 K Onan Generator Carburetor Choke

When the power goes out and stays out for days following an outage, a backup emergency generator is an invaluable piece of equipment to have, as it can run air conditioners, heaters, refrigerators and stoves. The Cummins Onan 6.5 emergency generator is run by a gasoline-powered engine. The choke on the engine opens and closes the carburetor vent, thus allowing to help it start or shut off when need be. If necessary, the choke can be replaced if it breaks.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the generator's spark plug wire with pliers.

    • 2

Unclasp the spring clips and lift off the air filter cover. Take out the filter element and then use a nut driver to remove the nuts holding the filter housing in place. This will allow access to the generator's carburetor.

    • 3

Remove the choke linkage from the carburetor's control arm with pliers. Install the new choke linkage with the pliers by slipping the wire through the hole on the control arm and attaching the other end of the choke handle.

    • 4

Slip the air filter housing back into place, insert the four mounting bolts by hand and tighten them with the nut driver. Replace the filter element and then the filter cover.

    • 5

Replace the generator's spark plug wire.
