How to Stop a Kill Switch From Popping

Riding lawn mowers come factory equipped with a safety switch or "kill switch" which shuts the engine off once the operator stands off the seat when running. It also prevents the engine from being started if no one is seated. This is a safety component to prevent the mower from driving away without an operator seated to steer and operate the machine. To prevent a kill switch from popping or engaging, you'll only need a few hand tools.

Things You'll Need

  • Wire strippers

Instructions

    • 1

Turn the riding mower off and remove the key.

    • 2

Lift the operator's seat and locate the kill switch: a small, plastic box with two wires beneath the seat.

    • 3

Cut the wires using wire cutters, then strip the ends of each wire with wire strippers, removing about an inch of insulation.

    • 4

Braid the two wire together, then wrap the bare ends of the wires with electrical tape.

    • 5

Lower the seat and place the gear in neutral. Put the key in the ignition and attempt to start the riding mower without being seated. The lawn mower should start; if it does not, lift the seat to ensure the wires are still braided together.
