How to Troubleshoot Super Bronco Mower Blades that Will Not Engage

The mower blades on a Troy-Bilt Super Bronco riding mower are engaged by the PTO (power take off) clutch, which sends the necessary power, following ignition, to the blades to get them running. If the PTO clutch is damaged and needs to be replaced, the mower blades will not run. Removing and replacing the clutch shaft will be necessary to reengage your Super Bronco mower blades, but fortunately, this is an operation that you can perform at home, and no special tools are necessary.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket wrench
  • Replacement PTO clutch shaft
  • Rubber mallet

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your Super Bronco mower. Wait for the engine to cool down before continuing.

    • 2

Open the front hood to access the engine.

    • 3

Locate the distinctive, circular-shaped flywheel part at the top of the rear of the Troy-Bilt's Briggs & Stratton engine. The flywheel will be covered with an iron shroud. Remove the bolts from the shroud with a socket wrench, then pull off the shroud and set it aside.

    • 4

Remove the Troy-Bilt flywheel's center bolt with the socket wrench.

    • 5

Affix a flywheel pulley over the exposed Super Bronco mower's flywheel. Tighten the center nut onto the flywheel pulley with the socket wrench until the flywheel piece completely pops free.

    • 6

Locate the oil pan directly below the removed flywheel. Remove its bolts with the socket wrench and set the pan aside. This will reveal the PTO clutch shaft.

    • 7

Remove all visible bolts that secure the clutch shaft to the engine assembly with the socket wrench.

    • 8

Return to the top of the engine and look in the area where the center of the flywheel formerly sat. The top of the PTO clutch shaft can be seen here. Hit the shaft at this point with a rubber mallet to dislodge it entirely.

    • 9

Slide a replacement PTO clutch shaft into the spot left by the old one. Secure it by reinserting the bolts you removed with the socket wrench.

    • 10

Reinstall the oil pan, flywheel and flywheel shroud by reversing the removal steps.

    • 11

Close the front hood on your Super Bronco mower.
