How to Take Off the Rear Wheel on a John Deere Lawn Tractor

John Deere Lawn Tractors are residential riding mowers. They are large mowers with heavy steel frames that can accommodate a large number of attachments. The wheels are pneumatic, like the tires on a car, to handle the weight and strain of the machine. When a tire loses air or needs to be repaired, it is easier to remove the tire than to try and take the whole machine into the shop. Taking a rear wheel off of a John Deere Lawn Tractor only takes a couple of minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove any rear attachments with a socket wrench. Refer to the attachment owner's manual for removal instructions.

    • 2

Push all the way down on the brake pedal. Pull the parking brake lever. This sets the parking brake.

    • 3

Push the free-wheeling control lever all the way down to lock the rear wheels. The lever is found underneath the right rear of the body.

    • 4

Lift the rear of the mower and place jack stands under it. Larger series mowers are heavy, so this may require two people.

    • 5

Remove the lug nuts with a socket wrench.

    • 6

Tap lightly around the rear of the wheel to break it loose from the axle. Remove the wheel from the mower.
