Brush Mower Vs. Finish Mower

Whether you’re maintaining an expansive, lush lawn or clearing an overgrown pasture, choose the right tool for the job. Brush mowers and finish mowers usually fall outside the realm of the average homeowner’s lawn maintenance equipment list. However, these specialty mowers may need a place in your garage if you own a large piece of grass-covered land, operate a lawn maintenance company or work on the landscaping crew of your area’s parks department.
  1. Brush Mowers

    • Brush mowers are high-powered machines that can tackle tall grass, dense shrubs and even small trees. Most models have powerful engines, multiple cutting blades and a wide cut trail to make light work of a heavy job. Brush mowers are available in walk-behind models and tow-behind models that attach to a tractor for very large jobs. Several manufacturers offer attachments that can turn their brush mowers into home generators, snow blowers, snow plows, chippers and wide-cut mowers.

    Brush Mower Uses

    • Grass and weeds in unkempt yards and fields quickly grow thick and unmanageable, harboring unwanted wildlife, pests and plant diseases. Unfortunately, the average lawnmower designed for home use won’t cut through all of that brush. A brush mower is ideal for clearing an abandoned or neglected yard or field. However, because the brush mower usually has a wide wheel base and cut trail, it is not the right choice for a small area or one with closely set trees and landscaping.

    Finish Mowers

    • Finish mowers, also called grooming mowers, tow behind a tractor or riding lawn mower, leaving a smooth manicured appearance even in uneven terrain. Multiple high-speed blades, floating links that maintain the blade height, and staggered wheels that prevent compaction create a picture-perfect finish. An extra-wide cutting path (some models are up to 17 feet wide), makes short work of a large lawn.

    Finish Mower Uses

    • Parks, recreation fields and large lawns look pleasing and inviting after being cut with a finish mower. The wide cut trail offered by a finish mower works best in large, open fields without many trees, shrubs or other landscaping that leaves narrow cutting spaces. Large estates, golf courses and hotels with grounds used frequently for special events all have large, open grassy areas that would benefit from a pass or two with a finish mower.
