How to Separate a Detachable AG Chain

Detachable AG chain, also known as agricultural chain, is commonly used on farm equipment. The ends of each link in the chain are made of roller bearing. The roller bearings ride on the sprocket. This reduces wear on the chain and sprocket, which maximizes the life of the equipment and reduces routine maintenance. When you need to remove an AG chain from a piece of equipment, you must separate a link in the chain.

Locate a link in the chain that has a cotter pin holding the link plate onto the bearings. Only one side of the chain has link plates with cotter pins.

Bend the tips of the cotter pins together with needle nose pliers and then pull the cotter pins out of the holes in the roller bearings.

    • 3

Grip the link plate with the pliers and pull the plate off the roller bearings.

    • 4

Pull both roller bearings off the link pins with the pliers and then pull the backside link plate off the adjacent chain links.

    • 5

Lift the chain off the sprockets.
