The Troy-Bilt Rider Mower Is Not Cranking

The Troy-Bilt company’s riding mowers and lawn tractors can cost thousands of dollars for purchase. However, the money spent on these machines could be a waste if the Troy-Bilt riding mower doesn’t crank. While some reasons for a Troy-Bilt mower not cranking are dependent on mower settings, other reasons have to do with regular maintenance and inspection.
  1. Fuel

    • Check the fuel tank on your Troy-Bilt riding mower. If your fuel tank is less than a third full, it’s possible there isn’t enough gas reaching the carburetor, which helps start the engine. Gas should not be older than 30 days. Otherwise, it could develop deposits that clog the fuel line and the filter, which should also be checked for blockage.

    Battery

    • Troy-Bilt riding mowers use heavy-duty batteries for operation. A dead or incorrectly installed battery won’t let the engine turn over. If your mower’s lights are dim or won’t come on, it’s the sign of a dead battery. Regardless of the voltage or battery size, it must be fully charged. The positive terminal (indicated with a “+” symbol) should be connected to the solenoid. The negative terminal should be connected with the black wire to a mounting bolt. If the mounting bolt is corrupt, it may not provide a proper ground for the battery and will hinder the start.

    Starting Position

    • Troy-Bilt riding mowers have specific position settings prior to start, depending on the model. Any items not in the right position could prevent the engine from starting. Check the parking brake, which should be off. If the model has a PTO (blade engage) lever like the Troy-Bilt Pony, it must be in the "OFF" position. Any of the zero-turn lawn tractors require the lap-bars extended all the way out.

    Fouled Spark Plugs

    • Spark plugs should be checked and cleaned during the mowing season and changed every season. Spark plugs become fouled from carbon deposits, preventing the tips from firing once engaged. If there isn’t enough continuous spark from the plugs, the fuel-air mixture will not combust and start the engine.

    Choke Settings

    • Troy-Bilt riding mowers often have choke controls, which allow extra fuel into the carburetor. A completely open choke during operation or start can flood the carburetor with fuel and thus the engine, preventing engine start. Ensure that a choke is not overused or on during operation.
