How to Set Breaker Ignition on a Briggs & Stratton Engine

Briggs and Stratton engines built before 1983 use breaker points to help generate the ignition spark. The point rubbing block contacts the crankshaft surface. A flat lobe on the crankshaft dictates the timing of point actions. The points close as the flat lobe passes the rubbing block and open during the remainder of the crankshaft revolution; this opening between the contacts is the breaker point gap. The size of the gap controls ignition timing and spark duration. Proper adjustment of the gap optimizes ignition system performance.

Instructions

Disconnect the spark plug wire from the plug, and position it away from the plug. Secure the wire in position with tape or string. Remove the engine shroud covering the flywheel. Remove the flywheel in the manner outlined in the manual for your model of Briggs and Stratton engine.

Remove the screws attaching the breaker point cover, and then remove the cover. Rotate the crankshaft until the breaker point rubbing block is off the flat lobe of the crankshaft, if necessary. The breaker points should now be open. The space between the point contacts is the gap you need to adjust.

Insert a feeler gauge of .020 of an inch into the breaker gap. Loosen the screws attaching the point assembly half a turn. Use a flat-bladed screwdriver to adjust the point position until you feel a slight drag while sliding the feeler gauge across the contacts. Tighten the point assembly attaching screws while maintaining the adjusted position. Remove the feeler gauge.
