How to Repair the Electric Clutch on an Ariens Lawn Mower

Ariens is a company that manufactures snow throwers and walk-behind, push lawn mowers. The company also makes a variety of riding lawn mowers. The cutting deck on the Ariens mower is controlled by the electric clutch. The clutch sends electrical current from the battery to the cutting deck. Over time, the electric clutch can wear out and go bad. The cutting deck will not engage if the electric clutch is out. Replacing the Ariens electric clutch takes approximately one hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the Ariens mower on a flat and level surface and then adjust the mower deck to its highest level.

    • 2

Open the mower's engine cover and remove the battery's negative cable with an adjustable wrench.

    • 3

Slide the jack under the mower, jack it up and set jack stands in place. Lower the Ariens onto the jack stands.

    • 4

Disconnect the plastic wiring harness attached to the electric clutch.

    • 5

Loosen the belt tension bolt and remove the drive belt from the pulleys.

    • 6

Remove the bolt holding the electric clutch to the crankshaft with the socket set. If leverage is needed to remove the bolt, slip a breaker bar over the handle of the ratchet and then remove the bolt.

    • 7

Lift the old clutch off and then set the new clutch in place. Screw in the retaining bolt and tighten it with the socket set.

    • 8

Set the belt back onto the pulleys, slide the tensioner to the right to increase belt tension and then tighten the tension bolt with the socket set.

    • 9

Plug the electric wiring harness into the new electric clutch.

    • 10

Jack up the Ariens, pull out the jack stands and then lower the mower to the ground. Replace the negative battery cable.
