22 HP Kohler Troy Bilt Riding Lawn Mower Horse Turns Over But Won't Start

The Troy-Bilt Horse lawn tractor uses a 22 Horsepower Kohler engine to operate the throttle controls, battery charger and PTO blade engaging system. But, none of these systems can operate if your Horse turns over but won’t start. If you’ve already eliminated the battery system as the problem, there are other systems that could be the cause.
  1. Safe Start

    • The Troy-Bilt Horse mower requires that certain mechanisms be in place for a safe start to prevent damage to you or the mower. The mower will not fully engage unless someone is in the seat. The throttle’s position must be in “Fast” and the parking brake must be off. To prevent blade damage, the PTO lever must be in the “off” position.

    Choke Control

    • The Choke Control, located on the throttle control level, gives you the ability to adjust how much fuel is going into the Kohler engine for combustion. A richer fuel-to-air ratio can give you a better start when your engine is cold. However, the Choke Control must be turned off after it starts. Otherwise, you will continuously shoot fuel into the engine and flood it, preventing a start.

    Spark

    • Your Horse’s Kohler engine, like other small engines, uses a spark plug to ignite the fuel-air mixture inside the combustion chamber. If the spark plug is fouled at the tip, there may not be enough electricity to ignite it. Fouling happens over time from debris and carbon build up in the combustion chamber. Also, check that the flywheel’s rotation is timed correctly so that the flywheel magnets can generate electricity for the spark plug.

    Fuel System

    • The fuel system can be contaminated or clogged from sediment and debris. There is no scheduled maintenance time to change the fuel filter, so check and replace it periodically. Also, inspect the fuel lines leading from the fuel tank and fuel pump.

    Fuel Quality and Level

    • Only use gas that is less than 30 days old to prevent deposits from entering the system. When you fill the tank or start your Horse mower, ensure that it is on level ground. That way there is enough fuel pressure to push through the primer and into the carburetor for injection into the combustion chamber.
