How to Lock Up Snow Blowers to Keep From Being Stolen

In regions that get a lot of snow during the winter, snow blowers are practically a must-have item just to make it out of the driveway. Snow blowers are walk-behind push tools that stir and hurl snow out of the way via a spinning auger. These machines typically cost anywhere from $200 to $1,500, which is a substantial enough investment. Unfortunately, these and other machines and tools are sometimes targeted by thieves.

Instructions

    • 1

Store the snow blower inside a secure, inside basement or garage if possible. Make sure windows and doors are kept locked at night and when you are away from home.

    • 2

Store the snow blower and other valuable yard tools and equipment inside a stable and strong outdoor shed. Ideally, the shed should be located in a fenced-in backyard. A key-operated door lock and dead lock or a padlocked latch can be used to secure the door to the shed.

    • 3

Install outdoor lighting and check the bulbs regularly, as thieves do not like to be exposed or visible.

Use an adjustable wrench or socket set to remove the rear wheels from the snow blower during the off season when the snow blower is not in use. The inability to push the machine away easily will dissuade most thieves.
