How to Hook Up the Choke on a Craftsman Mower

The choke in a Craftsman riding lawn mower is connected to the engine's carburetor and it restricts the flow of air to the carburetor. If your engine continues to shut down when it is idling, the choke valve might be open or possibly rusted out. You can manually replace an old or broken choke at any time, and you can order a new choke part from a Craftsman manufacturer or an online retailer.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your Craftsman riding lawn mower if it is on, wait for it to cool, then remove all screws from the top and bottom of the front motor cover. Lift up and remove the front cover.

    • 2

Locate the carburetor on the bottom front of the engine, then locate the circular choke part. A metal linkage rod connects it to the side of the carburetor.

    • 3

Turn the choke shaft counterclockwise into the "Open" position. Remove the two bolts connecting the choke to the carburetor using an adjustable wrench.

    • 4

Lift the choke out of the lawn mower, and place the new choke into the same position.

    • 5

Reinsert the bolts into the choke to hold it in place with the carburetor, and turn the choke shaft back to the "Closed" position.

    • 6

Place the front cover back onto the mower and reinsert the screws into the front cover.
