How to Connect the Deck to a Mower in a John Deer L120

The L120 is a garden tractor manufactured by John Deere, a company well-known for its larger tractors and farm equipment. The L120 is powered by a 22 horsepower twin-cylinder gasoline engine that spins the rear wheels as well as the cutting blades in the mower deck. The mower deck may be removed for repair or to make room for installing other attachments, such as snow throwers, snow blades or garden cultivators. When grass cutting season returns, know how to get your L120 mower deck installed properly once again.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the mower on a flat area and set the parking brake. Move the mower height adjustment lever to its highest setting. Slide the mower deck -- with the center roller facing the front -- under the tractor in between the front and rear wheels.

Place wood blocks under each side of the mower deck to raise it up a few inches. Move the deck height adjustment lever on the tractor to its lowest setting.

    • 3

Locate the mounting hole on the upper left side of the rear of the mower deck. Line up the mounting hole in the metal bracket from under the left side of the tractor with the hole in the deck. Insert a locking pin through the holes. Place a washer over the end of the locking pin. Push a spring clip through the hole in the end of the pin to secure the bracket to the deck. Connect the bracket on the right side of the tractor to the right side of the mower deck in the same fashion.

Locate the mounting bracket at the front of the mower deck beside the roller. Line up the hole in the end of the mounting rod at the front of the tractor with the hole in the deck bracket. Secure the rod to the deck with a locking pin, washer and spring clip.

Place a 15mm socket over the nut on the idler pulley on the top of the mower deck at the front. Rotate the idler pulley towards the front of the tractor with the wrench and hold it there. Slip the deck belt over the pulley on the underside of the tractor engine. Release the wrench slowly and remove it from the idler pulley

Remove the wood blocks from under the mower deck.

Route the drive cable located on the underside of the tractor under the deck belt and brake rod on the top of the mower deck. Hook the spring at the end of the cable to the hole in the bracket on top of the mower deck. Pull the end of the cable through the bracket. Insert the tab in the cable into the slot in the bracket. Release the cable. Secure the spring to the bracket with a spring clip.
