How to Get a Primer Bubble on a Lawnmower

A primer bubble, or more technically known as the primer bulb, is a rubber piece that can deteriorate or break, causing the primer to no longer work. Some lawnmowers require a primer to inject gas into the engine to allow it to start. If there is a hole or tear in the primer bubble, the engine won't prime and thus won't start. Replacing the primer bubble may require the use of a screwdriver along with a little effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Release the housing for the primer bubble, if your lawnmower has one. Some lawnmowers have tabs, while others have rings or no housing at all.

    • 2

Pull off the old rubber primer bubble. You may need to use the screwdriver to pry it off if it is stuck. On some models, a spring or ball may fall from the assembly. Watch for these items.

    • 3

Replace any components that fell out when you removed the primer bubble. Hold the piece gently in place.

    • 4

Stretch the new rubber primer bubble over the housing. Stretch it only far enough to slide over the rim. The rubber may weaken or break if stretched too far.

    • 5

Replace the outer housing that you removed in the beginning. On some models, snap the outer housing in place. On others, you may need to use a screwdriver to secure the housing.
