How to Load a Lawn Mower Into a Trailer

Summertime means taking care of the lawn, and big lawns require more equipment and manpower to get the job done. If you have your own lawn care business, you likely have trailers full of tools of the trade. Loading and unloading trailers can be a tricky operation. Improper ramp placement and poor procedures lead to a lot of unfortunate accidents. However, there are some basic guidelines that make loading your mowers into a trailer safer and easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Let down the gate of the trailer. Or, if the trailer is fully enclosed, open the doors and swing them out to the sides. Secure the doors in place with latches or bungees.

    • 2

Place aluminum ramps onto the end of the trailer bed. Some trailers have gates that double as ramps. Others have built-in ramps that slide out from under the bed. In any case, you want to ensure that the ramp is firmly in place and not lying at a severe angle or tilted to one side.

    • 3

Load a push mower by hand. Place the ramps closer together, and simply push the mower up. Ask for help if the mower feels heavy or you get winded. Avoid stretching forward too far, because you may strain your back.

    • 4

Drive a riding mower into the trailer backwards. The reverse gear keeps you moving slowly, reducing the chances of an accident. When it comes time to unload, driving out forwards will be safer than backing out.
