How to Remove the Recoil Starter From a Toro S-620

The Toro company manufactures tools and machines for garden, agricultural and landscaping applications. Their products include weed trimmers, lawn mowers, small tractors and snowblowers. The Toro S-620 single-stage snowthrower, or snowblower, was manufactured between 1985 and 1991. It had a Tecumseh 2-stroke engine, and a 20-inch clearing swath. The S-620 was equipped with a manual recoil pull-rope starter, which can break or malfunction. Removing the recoil starter mechanism requires only a few basic tools and simple steps, and can be accomplished by the average homeowner.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the snowthrower on a level surface and block the wheels with chocks, or wedge the machine between two objects to immobilize it. Turn all controls to the "Off" position. Locate the upper shroud housing and the screws that hold it to the frame. Remove the gas cap. Don a pair of safety goggles.

    • 2

Use a Phillips screwdriver to turn the shroud screws counterclockwise and remove them. Pull the upper shroud straight up over the frame, or partially back to gain access to the recoil starter housing. Replace the gas cap. Find the three Phillips screws that hold the recoil starter housing to the cylinder block and remove them with the Phillips screwdriver. If the pull rope is still attached, turn the housing over and hold it steady, by wedging or propping it. If the pull rope is broken at the handle side, pull the starter housing free and turn it over.

    • 3

Pull the rope out to its full extension, and align the cut-out sections of the pulley and the metal pulley cover. While the pulley and cover are aligned, tie a slip not in the rope at the housing hole to keep spring tension, if the rope is still attached. If not attached, align the pulley and cover.

    • 4

Remove the center Phillips screw from the middle of the starter assembly, then gently slide out the round metal cover. To keep the pulley immobile if it turns, lock a pair of vise grips on the pulley, with the pliers wedged against the housing.

    • 5

Remove the knotted end of the rope from the pulley stop-hole, and untie the slip knot. Measure the replacement pulley rope against the old rope. The pulley rope for the S-620 model is a No. 4 diamond braid. Knot the end of the pulley rope in the pulley stop-hole, wind it around the pulley and direct the end through the upper shroud guide hole.

Insert the center screw in the metal cover and tighten it with a Phillips screwdriver. Release the vise grips from the pulley. Place the starter housing back on the cylinder block and insert the three screws. Tighten the three screws with the Phillips screwdriver. If the rope was broken at the handle end, double-knot the rope inside the pull handle. Remove the gas cap. Replace the upper shroud and insert the mounting screws. Tighten all mounting screws with the Phillips screwdriver. Replace the gas cap.
