How to Troubleshoot a John Deere 160 Riding Mower Toggle Switch

The John Deere 160 is a lawn tractor manufactured from 1986-88 with a one-cylinder Kawasaki engine. The dashboard on the 160 is equipped with a toggle-type power take-off switch that operates in tandem with the rotary ignition switch. If the toggle switch is defective, the tractor will not start. The simple on/off switch is connected by two wires under the tractor hood. Testing the switch with an ohmmeter takes only a few minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Shut off the tractor by turning the rotary ignition switch counterclockwise on the dashboard and setting the throttle control lever to the locked position. Wait for the engine to cool.

    • 2

Release the latches on each side of the hood cowling to raise the hood forward and off the engine.

    • 3

Follow the path of the two wires from the back of the toggle switch on the rear of the dashboard to the two connection terminals on the engine coil. Pull the metal clip at the end of each wire off its terminal using needle nose pliers.

    • 4

Clip each of the two ohmmeter probes to the two switch wires.

    • 5

Flip the toggle switch to the "On" position. If the ohmmeter displays zero or swings to the infinity range, the switch is faulty and must be replaced.
