How to Replace the Mandrel-Pulley Assembly on a Riding Mower

The mandrel pulley is part of the mandrel assembly on your riding mower. It holds the cutting blades on your riding mower in place so they can move properly. If the mandrel-pulley assembly comes loose from the main body of the mower, you need to replace it before you use your mower again, or worse damage could occur. Since the pulley is on the very top of the mandrel assembly, it’s the easiest part to remove.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the cover of your riding lawn mower and ensure the power is off. Locate the mandrel-pulley assembly holding the blades in place on the mower.

    • 2

Place a piece of wood between the blades and the side of the mower’s body to keep them from moving when you remove the pulley.

    • 3

Lift the belt from the pulley. Use the socket wrench to loosen the bolt that holds the mandrel pulley assembly in place. Lift the pulley off the mandrel assembly.

    • 4

Place a new pulley in the old pulley’s place. Tighten the wrench over it. Fit a new belt over the pulley.
