What Kind of Oil Goes in the Rear of an STX38 John Deere Mower?

In 1837, blacksmith John Deere invented a self-scouring steel plow to easily cut furrows through the sticky soil of the Midwest. The new tool launched what remains to this day a highly successful farming and gardening equipment manufacturer. In 1988, the company that Deere founded released the STX38, a riding mower. Any of four engine oils is ideal for lubricating the machine.

  1. Turf-Gard

    • John Deere recommends Turf-Gard oil for the equipment it manufactures, including all mower types, shredders, rototillers and generators. The oil is also designed for gasoline-powered engines that require oil categorized as “SL.” As a multi-viscosity lubricant, Turf-Gard circulates through the engine quickly in both warm and cold weather.

    Torq-Gard

    • Torq-Gard oil is formulated for high-speed gas- and diesel-powered engines. According to John Deere, the oil is “highly refined,” and it has an additive that reduces buildup in the pistons and wear to the engine. The lubricant also inhibits acids that rust the motor’s metal parts. Moreover, Torq-Gard does not congeal in cold weather.

    Torq-Gard Plus 50

    • According to John Deere, its Torq-Gard Plus 50 engine oil is designed for heavy-use machinery. The lubricant’s formula prevents corrosion, debris deposits and wear. The oil also remains fluid in cold temperatures and maintains its integrity over long periods of time, which reduces the need for oil and filter changes.

    JD Plus-4

    • JD Plus-4 engine oil works well for gasoline-powered mowers that run on four cycles. The piston in a four-cycle, or four-stroke, engine takes two revolutions to complete the four-step cycle of intake, compression, power and exhaust. This lubricant is also formulated to remain fluid in cold weather and to clean the engine as it greases its parts.
