How to Wire the Ignition on a Tecumseh Engine

The Tecumseh engine relies on the proper wiring of its ignition system in order to start properly. The motor will fail to start if the spark plug is disconnected or if the starter solenoid is not attached to the battery's red, positive terminal wire. You can wire the Tecumseh engine's ignition and ensure proper starting operations even if you have never repaired a motor previously.

Ensure the engine is not running. Find the spark plug at the top of the engine -- it will be partially inserted into the spark plug hole and should be connected to the thin black wire emerging from the spark plug hole. This is the Tecumseh engine's ignition wire. Insert this wire into the rear of the spark plug. If the ignition wire is disconnected from the spark plug, the engine will not ignite.

Examine the machine's battery; the rectangular battery that sits in front of the Tecumseh engine assembly will have two terminal wires, each extending out of separate sides of the battery. Trace the red terminal wire back to the starter solenoid on the engine assembly. The starter solenoid is crucial to the ignition process. If the red terminal wire is not connected to the bolt on the left of the starter solenoid, the engine will not ignite properly. Loop the open end of the Tecumseh's red terminal wire over the solenoid's left side bolt.

Secure the terminal wire into place on the starter solenoid by turning the bolt it is looped over with a socket wrench. Turn the bolt clockwise with your wrench to tighten it. This will ensure the Tecumseh engine's ignition system is properly wired.
