How to Remove the Mandrel Housing From the Lawn Mower Deck of a Murray Riding Lawn Mower

The mandrel housing is located on the bottom of a lawn mower's deck. The mandrel housing is critical to the blade shaft's operation, and if it becomes damaged it must be removed for replacement immediately. You can remove the mandrel housing of your Murray riding lawn mower deck even if you haven't worked on lawn mower decks previously.

      Park the Murray mower and cut the engine. Ensure the mower is on level ground.

      Find the adjuster arms on the bottom of the deck. There is one arm on each side of the deck. Each arm contains two hairpins, one on each side of the arm. Use pliers to pull out and remove each of these hairpins.

      Use the pliers to pull out the Murray's extension spring. The spring is on the blade control rod, which is located on the very bottom of the deck.

      Find the hanger rod located on the front hanger area of the mower's deck. Pull the rod from the hanger area with your hands.

      Move to the lawn mower's two back tires. The stock pulley is located on the deck by these tires. Pull up on the drive belt on this pulley to remove the belt.

      Slide out the mandrel housing by pulling it free from the right side of the mower.
