While MTD started producing gasoline-powered lawnmowers in 1958, riding mowers came a few years later. The Task Force riding mower that showed up in the late 1990s had a front-mounted 12-horsepower gasoline engine that powered the transaxle and an engine-mounted clutch that powered the cutting deck blades.
The cutting deck of the MTD Task Force mower is made from sheet steel and houses twin cutting blades. Spindles connect the blades to pulleys mounted on top of the deck. A V-groove belt connects the deck pulleys to a clutch pulley mounted on the mower engine. A dashboard-mounted PTO switch controls the clutch, which turns the mower's blades on or off.
The MTD replacement part number for the belt needed for your Task Force riding mower is 954-0329A. Some aftermarket belt manufacturers may recognize the original MTD part number of 754-0329. Since MTD manufactured riding mowers for several different companies, you may find a replacement belt using a non-MTD part number. For instance, the Montgomery Ward part number for the same belt is TM033917A. Belts from 38-inch Cub Cadet or Yardman mowers also share many MTD parts and may use the same belt.
If you cannot locate a belt for your MTD Task Force riding mower by the part number, you may be able to locate one using the measurements of the belt. The flexible belt that drives the cutting deck on your MTD Task Force riding mower is 69 inches long and 5/8 inch wide. A cross-section of the belt reveals that it is designed to ride in a V-groove pulley.
