How to Mow the Lawn Around Stepping Stones

Laying stepping stones will reduce wear and tear on your green lawn from foot traffic. The stones provide a convenient solution to both the people walking and the gardener trying to keep the lawn looking manicured. Even if you do nothing more than lay down store-bought slabs of slate or concrete, you have created a walkway. However, the next challenge is learning how to mow around the walkway without hitting the stones with your mower blade.

Instructions

Mow the yard around the stepping stone pathway as normal but when you get close to the walkway, guide your mower in a straight line parallel with the walkway. Come as close as possible without touching the stones. This will create a straight edge that highlights the walkway.

Trim around the stones with a string trimmer, keeping the string as high as, or a little lower than, the surrounding lawn. Set the trimmer on the edging mode if you have settings. Walk around each stone to cut the grass growing up against the edges of the stepping-stones.

Clean up the cut grass from on top of the stepping stones, either with a leaf blower or with whisk broom. Otherwise, the dead grass will dry out and cover the steps, reducing their visibility. If there is a lot of cut grass from around the stones, use the blower or broom to push it onto the previously cut lawn. Run the lawn mower along the pathway to mulch the cut grass into the lawn, but make sure your mower is blowing the cut grass away from the stepping stone walkway.
