Huskee Riding Mower Will Not Move

Huskee riding mowers, also called lawn tractors, are manufactured by the Murray Corp. The tractors are meant for large surface areas that cannot be easily mowed by a standard upright power mower and should. They should only be operated by an adult who is familiar with riding and using large power equipment. If the mower will not move, some troubleshooting will be needed.
  1. Starting the Engine

    • The Huskee/Murray riding mower will not move if the engine is not started correctly. To start the tractor, sit on the riding seat and push down on the brake pedal and hold your foot down on the pedal. Check the blade rotate control and move the control to “Disengage” and then move the throttle control forward until the throttle is in “Choke.” Once you are ready, turn the ignition key to “Start” and wait for the engine to start up, then let go of the key. When the motor is running, carefully move the throttle to “Slow” and let the engine warm up for a few minutes before pressing down on the gasoline pedal to move forward.

    Automatic Drive Disconnect

    • The riding tractor uses a hydrostatic automatic drive transmission to operate and move, which must be operated correctly in order for the vehicle to move. The automatic drive disconnect is under the driver’s seat and must be in the “Drive” position in order for the tractor to move. Once you have set the automatic drive disconnect to “Drive," slowly lift your left foot up off the brake pedal and adjust the throttle control to “Fast.” Slowly use your right foot to step on the speed control pedal and move the pedal forward to increase speed.

    Motion Drive Belt

    • If the motion drive belt is loose, the tractor will not operate well or in some cases will not move at all. The tractor must be turned off and cool before checking the motion drive belt. In addition, disconnect the wire to the spark plug before proceeding in order to keep the engine from accidentally starting. Inspect the motion drive belt and make sure the belt is threaded through all of the belt guides. Adjust the belt until the belt is routed properly.

    Worn Battery

    • Note that the tractor uses a battery that will eventually need to be charged and the mower might not move if the battery is low on power. Turn off the tractor and remove the battery from the tractor once the unit is cool. Attach the battery to a 12-volt battery charger and charge at a rate of 6 amps for at least one hour before replacing in the mower. Attach the red cable to the + (positive) terminal and the black cable to the – (negative) terminal with the fasteners.
