How to Change a Rod in a 15 1/2 HP Kohler Engine

The 15 1/2 horsepower Kohler engine is used in a variety of lawn maintenance machines. This engine has a rod connected to an eyelet on the carburetor that helps operate the governor, which limits the top speed of the engine for safety and fuel efficiency purposes. You can change out this governor's rod on the Kohler engine, even if you don't have experience with adjusting small motor governors.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the carburetor, which sits about midway up the left side of the Kohler 15 1/2 HP engine.

    • 2

Notice the eyelet near the top of the carburetor. The governor's rod connects into this eyelet. Pull this rod out of the eyelet with your hands.

    • 3

Follow the rod back to where its other end connects to the governor. Loosen the bolt at this connection point with counterclockwise twists using a socket wrench. Remove the rod.

    • 4

Slide the replacement rod into the connection point on the governor. Tighten the bolt back up with your socket wrench using clockwise twists to secure the rod.

    • 5

Slip the other end of the governor's rod back into the carburetor's eyelet.
