Power Aerator Vs. Tow Aerator

Power aerators and tow aerators are designed to do the same job on your lawn, yet each operates slightly differently. A power aerator is a tool similar to a lawn mower that you walk behind to use, while a tow aerator hitches to a tractor for you to pull around your lawn.
  1. Power Aerators

    • A power aerator gets its name because even though you have to push the device around your lawn, it has a low-horsepower motor that turns the aerating spikes. Though the two devices are not interchangeable, a power aerator shares some similarities in appearance with a rototiller. Power aerators often have removable weights that allow you to make the machine heavier, to have more effect on the lawn.

    Tow Aerators

    • Tow aerators are available in several different sizes and range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand, depending on their features. The structure of this garden tool is somewhat simple; it has a bar that connects to the hitch on a tractor, a set of wheels to allow it to roll and a bar covered in aerating spikes. On more expensive versions, you can set the depth of the aerator spikes to your exact requirements.

    Selection

    • If you wish to aerate your lawn, you must decide whether to purchase or rent an aerator. Because of the price to purchase a high-quality aerator, renting the machine might be a better option, since you typically only use it a couple of times a year. Opt for the power aerator if your lawn is small and you don't have a tractor to pull the aerator. Tow aerators are ideal if you have a large amount of lawn to aerate.

    Aeration

    • The purpose of aeration is to poke holes in the lawn to allow water and fertilizer to soak in. This is especially important if the dirt below the grass is hard and compacted. Both power aerators and tow aerators perform the task in virtually the same method, as the main difference between the two device is propulsion. Regardless of which method of aerator you use, its spinning spikes will aerate your lawn to improve its health.
